ATTRACTIONS

Chain Tree
Chain tree is situated at the end of Ghats section and has an interesting story behind. This legendary Chain Tree of Lakkidi is a large ficus tree with hanging chains. It is believed that the local tribesman who guided a British engineer to reach Wayanad was killed by that British engineer to claim the fame of discovery. The spirit of the tribesman was haunting the travelers and the spirit is held in this tree.

Lakkidi View Point
Lakkidi is the entry to Wayanad through Thamarassery Ghats pass. The view point is one of the major attractions in Wayanad where one can have a whole picturesque view of serpentine passes which leads to Wayanad. Reaching this spot is close by 5 kms from Vythiri town.

Jain Temple
Wayanad has a place accommodating Jainism and there is the famous Jain temple in Sulthan Bathery which was earlier known as Kidaganad town in Kerala. This temple was later used as a place to store armory of Tipu Sultan after he captured it. The temple was built in 13th century of Common Era and is a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India.

Karlad Lake
Karlad Lake is famous for its sports and adventure activities like kayaking, rock climbing, paintball, archery, boating and land zorbing and it also has the longest zip line across a lake in South India. It’s open for all days from 9 AM to 5 PM.

Kanthanpara Waterfalls
This is an unnoticed attraction of Wayanad. It is a smaller version of the famous Meenmutti and Soochipara waterfalls. Waterfalls from an altitude of 30m here. Though it is small, this place is easily accessible and not much crowded. This spot is best for swimming, family picnics and to enjoy nature’s beauty.

Meenmutty Waterfalls
Meenmutty is the most prominent and natures’ gift to Wayanad where the water forces itself from over 100ft in three separate levels. One can enjoy separate viewpoints for all three waterfalls. This fall is only accessible after a 2km jungle trek and gives a spectacular feel and natural splendor at the summit. This masterpiece is a must visit attraction in Wayanad.

Muthanga Wild Sanctuary
The freely roaming elephants are one of the major attractions here. Tigers are also seen occasionally. There are various species of deer, monkeys, birds, butterflies and insects housed in this protected area. The sanctuary has a large population of Pachydermata and is declared as project elephant site.

Pakshipathalam
This is a natural rock cave deep inside the Wayanad forest. It is at a height of 1,740 meters in the Brahmagiri hills. En route to this place one can see moist deciduous forests, hillocks, grasslands, slippery trails and narrow rocky caves. These treks will give a spectacular view of caves that are home to many birds. There are stories that saints meditated here ages ago.

Sunrise Valley
Sunrise Valley or Kurumbalakotta is a mountain hillock in Kerala which is 991m. above mean sea level and is situated in the center of Wayanad. This misty mountains and valleys in the hill give a pleasant feel to the trekkers. The view of the mist engulfing the natural beauty of Wayanad can be witnessed here. The sunrise here is a must-see for trekkers.

Thirunelly Temple
To the side of Brahmagiri hills here lay an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Mahavishnu. The temple is also known as Kashi of the South. It is believed that Lord Brahma came across this beautiful place and found an idol resting in Amla (Gooseberry) tree. He recognizes the idol as Lord Mahavishnu and installed the idol there. On Brahma’s request Lord Vishnu promised that water around the temple will wash away sins and thus stream Papanashini originated.

Tholpetty Wild Sanctuary
In the north of Wayanad, one can visit Tholpetty Sanctuary. Open to wildlife jeep safari, the tourists can observe various species of animals and birds in their natural territory. Watching animals come down to drink water in the lake is a major tourist attraction here. The plantation has Teak, Eucalyptus, Silver Oak and Rosewood which covered one-third of the sanctuary.

Pookkode lake
Is a second largest fresh water lake in Kerala. Boating, fish Spa and romantic environment are the main attractions.

Heritage museum
The Museum displays tribal relics and artifacts.

Edakkal cave
This is a natural beauty of Wayanad where a large sized rock is held between two mighty rocks. A must visit place for adventurists and trekkers. Inside the caves are pictorial writings which are believed to date back in 6000 BC from the Neolithic man, representing prehistoric civilization. These Stone Age carvings is a must see as they are the only known cave carving in south India.

Soochippara Water falls
Like Meenmutty, Soochippara is another iconic attraction in Wayanad. The amazing view of the milky white stream of water falling from the high ranges through rocks and trees is seen here. A 45-minute trek brings you to the main pool of the waterfall. The visitors can see tea plantation, rocky edge and dense forests where there is a good possibility of sighting a tiger. Bathing is allowed in waterfall.

Chembra Peak
Chembra peak is the highest and largest peak in Western Ghats of India in between Nilgiris and Himalayas exceeding 2000m. The heart shaped lake is a must visit attraction in Wayanad and the view of the tea plantations is spectacular from the peak. It is located near the town of Meppadi and is 8Kms from the south of Kalpetta. The major attractions are a heart shaped lake on the top, 4.5 km of trekking and tree swing.

Kuruva Island
Kuruva Island is a protected river delta, having a cluster of islands midst of Kabini River in Wayanad. The Island is spread across a whopping 950 acres which are densely populated with rich flora and fauna. Many natural attractions of this place like the bamboo bridges, rare tree species and rare species of birds, orchids, and herbal plants can be noticed in this Island. A definite paradise for a nature lover.

Pazhassi Tomb
This tomb is built to commemorate the fearless king of Kerala, “Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja”. The tomb is constructed in the place where the king was cremated. In 1996 this tomb was converted into museum and Pazhassi raja’s sword and other historical relics are seen here.

Banasura Sagar Dam
Banasura Sagar Dam is one of the most prominent tourist attractions in Wayanad. This dam is considered to the largest earth dam in India and second largest in Asia and first in India. The Banasura Sagar Dam is across the Karamanathodu River, a tributary of river Kabini. It got its name from “Banasura”, the son of King Mahabali a famous ruler of Kerala. This is the third largest peak of western Ghats. Main attractions are speed boat, pontoon boat, tree swing and fish spa.

Karappuzha Dam
The view of the dam captures the beauty of Wayanad. The dam was constructed in the midst of lush greenery and natural beauty of this place. The construction began 4 decades ago starting in 1977 and was completed in 2004.
